Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA)
The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) is Michigan’s largest contemporary arts center and multidisciplinary laboratory for the advancement of fine art. Their new facility allows UICA to present an even more dynamic array of contemporary art, new media, and experimental design/architecture projects.
Features include:
- 8,500 sq ft of gallery space, two theatres, a 1,000 sq ft youth studio, 3,000 sq ft ceramics studio, two lounges, two reading areas, an artist-in residence studio, and a 3,500 sq ft outdoor sculpture terrace.
- Advancing our region’s growing reputation for ground-breaking green initiatives by creating one of the nation’s first LEED Certified facilities uniting nonprofit, government, retail and residential components.
- Offering Grand Rapids a new international artist-in-residency program, two film and performance theatres, more than 30 dynamic exhibitions, 125 educational programs, and exceptional art therapy services for the underserved.
This project was completed as part of a three-phase development allowing the UICA to effectively plan for fundraising and move into the spaces in an organized fashion. The building will be submitted for LEED certification.
